Case Study: Upgrading Decades-Old Databases & Reporting for a National Education Network
From time to time, we like to share case studies of what we’ve been working on here at Intertech. It gives insight into the type of work we do, what you can expect if you work with Intertech to solve your software needs, and what it’s like to work as a consultant for Intertech on challenging projects.
This new case study dives into the work we’ve done with the Menta Group, a national network of schools for children with behavioral, emotional, or intellectual development delays. Menta approached us in 2016 for help creating new, updated database reports. Over the course of several projects, our expert consultant helped Menta upgrade their entire database infrastructure and reporting software to the latest standards.
Bringing a SQL Server & Reporting into the 21st Century
When we first began working with the Menta Group, their systems were very old. An independent contractor had developed the databases and application in the early 1990s. After delivery, the Menta Group received no ongoing maintenance or support for the software beyond what their internal IT department could manage. Intertech’s expert consultant, Kyle Libbert, was surprised to find technology that was nearly three decades old still running all of Menta’s school information and management application.
Over the course of an initial eight-month engagement, Kyle moved all of Menta’s databases to the latest version of SQL. He also upgraded the SQL Reporting software to the latest version and recreated over 150 pre-existing reports on the upgraded platform. Working remotely from Intertech’s Minnesota offices, Kyle was also able to implement some much-needed new features and systems to match changes in policies and procedures over the previous three decades.
The database and reporting powers every aspect of managing a national network of schools. Menta uses the software for attendance, transportation management, lunch tracking, and behavioral records. Each of these criteria, in turn, becomes part of critical government reporting that’s obligatory for continued funding. Upgrading Menta’s infrastructure has led to gains in productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness when it comes to student success and government disclosure. The improvements improve the quality of education for students, teachers, and administrators across the country.
